Hindustan Antibiotics Ltd. (HAL), a Government of India enterprise, was established in 1954 at Pimpri, Pune with the assistance of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). HAL began as a bulk drug manufacturing company for Penicillin and was initially known as the "Penicillin Factory".
Production of Penicillin (Penicillin G) started with an initial capacity of 9 million mega units (MMU), which was subsequently enhanced to 2,400 MMU. In addition to Penicillin G, HAL was the first company in India to start production of bulk drugs such as Streptomycin Sulphate, Benzathine Penicillin, Procaine Penicillin, Sodium Penicillin, Gentamycin, 6-APA and Ampicillin.
HAL is the only company in India that has had the distinction of discovering two antibiotics: HAMYCIN, a potent antifungal antibiotic used in humans, and AUREOFUNGIN, an antifungal antibiotic used to control various plant diseases. Over time, HAL has diversified into manufacturing and marketing a wide range of life-saving formulations, specialised agricultural products and veterinary medicines.
HAL is also the only public sector company supplying Narcotic Detection Kits to the Narcotics Control Bureau, Government of India. Its manufacturing facilities generally comply with WHO–GMP requirements for the production of various beta-lactam dry powder injectables, cephalosporin dry powder injectables and intra-venous fluids (IVF). Facilities for the manufacture of beta-lactam tablets and capsules, non-penicillin tablets and liquid orals comply with Schedule M requirements.
HAL also manufactures a range of agricultural products including Streptocycline, Aureofungin, Humaur, Azotomeal and Phosphomeal. All drugs manufactured by HAL conform to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Schedule M. Quality is built into every stage of production through stability and validation studies, in-process control, quality assurance and quality control, backed by highly skilled and trained staff.
The Research & Development (R&D) wing of HAL draws its strength from coordinated contributions in microbiology, biochemistry, organic chemistry, pharmacology, toxicology, parasitology, immunodiagnostics and formulations. Equipped with sophisticated instruments, the R&D team develops new formulations and supports the manufacturing departments. HAMYCIN and AUREOFUNGIN were discovered by HAL's R&D division.
HAL's human medicines, agricultural products and veterinary medicines are available throughout the country and are also exported to various international markets. The company supplies life-saving drugs to government institutions, state governments, public sector corporations and other agencies, and is actively strengthening its national and international presence.
HAL also participates in the "Pradhan Mantri Bharatiya Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana" (PMBJP) by contributing its product range to this flagship scheme, thereby supporting affordable healthcare for all.
Over the years, HAL has received numerous national and international awards for manufacturing quality products. The company has received four Presidential Awards for best all-round performance, an Export Merit Certificate from the Export Promotion Council of India, the Excellent Marketing Management Performance Award, the Udyog Ratna Award (2007) and the Economic Development Award (2008).
